After a two-show day, Broadway’s pet-owning performers love nothing more than coming home to their number one fan: a loyal four-legged friend. In honor of the annual Broadway Barks dog and cat adoption event, coming up on July 9 in Shubert Alley, we asked stage stars to show their puppy—and kitty!—love by telling us all about their furry pals.
CAROLE SHELLEY (Grandma in Billy Elliot)
What is your pet’s name and breed?
She is known as Lena, short for Galina, which is Russian for “hen.” She is a champion Russian Blue with Wicked green eyes.
What is your pet’s favorite pastime?
Sleeping and eating dried chicken treats.
What’s the funniest thing your pet has done?
She has no tricks, but the funniest thing she ever did was to mistake my new gray shearling, slippers for her kittens. I found her carrying one of the slippers "by the scruff" and pushing it under an armchair!
Do you look like your pet?
No, I don’t look like my sweetie pie—I wish I did!
